Enabling Informed Decisions in Breast Cancer through Information Technologies Issue #5 December 2018

Dear subscriber,
“A unique collaboration between DESIREE and three other EU funded projects with different but aligned objectives towards cancer care innovation”   While the integration stages bring us very close to the final functional system prototype, integration challenges are plenty and of course anticipated. The management of change requests is a big challenge by itself! However, all teams are focused into the prototype finalization, which in turn will be subject to end-user validation (Validation milestone). To provide a proof of validation with end-users will play a key role in further exploitation decisions.

Early enough in the project lifetime we identified a genuine interest by different stakeholders (industrial, clinical) in terms of project outcomes and exploitation. There is an ongoing discussion with interested parties, and this becomes more concrete as our prototype is shaped up. On demand demos are offered to anyone interested – so please just contact us here if you would like to request a demo!

The last months have been also very active in terms of dissemination activities. On 19th September, DESIREE organized a very targeted Workshop titled “Decision Support Systems for Oncology”, as part of IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Application & Services, 17-20 September 2018, in Ostrava, Czech Republic. At the same time, the project was represented by different partners in other Conferences and events, such as the Irish Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference (IMVP), 29-31 August 2018, Ulster University, Belfast campus and the Special Topic Conference (STC) “Decision Support Systems and Education – Help and Support in Healthcare”, Zagreb, Croatia, 14-16 October, 2018. Resulting publications are available in Zenodo project repository.

I am very proud to announce a unique collaboration between DESIREE and three other EU funded projects with different but aligned objectives towards cancer care innovation. In this framework, we are co-organizing a Special Track titled “Technological and Data-driven Innovations in Cancer Care”, as part of 32th IEEE CBMS International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems, which is taking place in Cordoba, Spain on 5-7 June 2019! Paper submission deadline is 14 January 2019.

I wish a wonderful, productive and healthier New Year to all!

Project Team meeting in Belfast

Against all odds…and despite the extreme weather conditions prognosed for 27-28 November for Belfast area, the DESIREE project team got safely together in Belfast, in 29-30 November 2018. The occasion was the holding of a periodic F2F team meeting, hosted by DESIREE partners in Ulster University. The final prototypes which will be resulted from the project and of course the validation phase completion were among the key topics that were discussed.

GLOBOCAN 2018 - New Global Cancer Data

New global cancer data (September 2018) suggests that the global cancer burden has risen to 18.1 million cases and 9.6 million cancer deaths. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimate that one-in-five men and one-in-six women worldwide will develop cancer over the course of their lifetime, and that one-in-eight men and one-in-eleven women will die from their disease. Breast Cancer is the 2nd cancer type in incidence and the 5th cancer type in mortality cause (Source: GLOBOCAN 2018)

CANCER TODAY provides a suite of data visualization tools to explore estimates of the incidence, mortality, and prevalence of 36 specific cancer types and of all cancer sites combined in 185 countries or territories of the world in 2018, by sex and age group, as part of the GLOBOCAN project.

The main focus of IARC’s Section of Cancer Surveillance (CSU) is the ongoing analysis of global cancer data and the development of statistics for cancer control action, in keeping with one of the primary aims of IARC: to describe and elucidate cancer occurrence worldwide.
